Hello,
Does anyone have any suggestions on good, hypoallergenic food to feed a greyhound with possible food allergy? One of my girls has been dealing with an allergy for over 6 months now. It started off in early May 2015 so we initially thought it was pollen related. She developed sores around tear duct area and the side of her mouth and would scratch herself. We placed her on Benadryl and Steroids and it did clear up, however she had a relapse in the late summer and we needed to restart the treatment. There were no issues in the fall and recently (late October 2015) she developed the same symptoms again. I called her dermatologist to set up allergy testing but would like to try some solutions in the mean time as well.
Currently, we feed her Acana, butternut squash and pork. I do not give her any chicken or treats for fear of worsening the symptoms. I read somewhere that they recommend a kangaroo based food for suspected food allergies but it is rather expensive. I would certainly give t a try if it was worth a go - does anyone have any experiences with food allegries and what type of food proved beneficial?
Thank you

We had a similar situation with our 4 year old greyhound. Someone recommended to try a raw diet for him. Since He has been on it for 4 months, he has had no more digestive issues. He also has more energy and his coat is so soft and shiny!! We purchase his food in Aylmer from "Raw for Pets". I would highly recommend them; they were so helpful!!!!!

Food allergies can be difficult to deal with. I have heard raw food diets help with it but I don't have much knowledge on that myself. Some people reccommend limited ingredient diets, if you want to do some research on it I would suggest dogfoodadvisor.com. It is a good site to gain information on ingredients in different dog food brands but the information can be overwhelming and the way that they rate the food may not be completely accurate as they have some bias for and against certain food ingredients that can be disputed by some nutritionists, but overall it is a good site. I currently feed my chicken sensitive guy Acana Lamb and Apple and he is doing well on that, I actually thought that the squash and pork would be a good choice as some say that pork is a novel protein as well (kangaroo, fish, lamb, duck are typically viewed as novel proteins that are less likely to cause allergic reactions). Good luck in your search, there are endless options and I hope you can find one that fits your dogs needs and your budget. All the best.

Thank you for your replies. I heard good things about the raw diet but I am not sure I could manage it, definitely worth looking into it

I don't have any experience with resolving food issues. I'm assuming this ACANA food is grain free. We feed ACANA Pacifica which is a grain free blend. I seem to recall see a "prepared" raw food. Perhaps there are options to make it easier to do raw? Hopefully someone with experience with raw can chime in. Good luck!

A few years ago, I had added pork to my pack's diet, three of the four developed hives, loose stools/diarrhea and itchy skin. The pork was thoroughly cooked, introduced gradually and totaling only 3 or 4 small pieces over a period of time per meal. Once the pork was removed from their diet, all the problems cleared up. A few years later, I picked up canned dog food which contained pork and almost within hours the loose stools / diarrhea were back. They do eat beef and chicken with no problems.
If you are interested in trying a raw diet, I would suggest going on the GRA FB page and asking for information re raw diets. There are many on that site that do feed raw. Maybe you could also post the allergies your girl has been suffering with. Good luck with your girl, I hope you find out the problem.

Thank you for the advice. Does anyone have experience with Honest Kitchen? I read it is human grade but it does not seem to be grain free
