Supervision.
Digging is a lot of fun. You need to catch/stop them as soon as they start, and tell them to "leave it" or "don't dig" or whatever command you choose.

No real advise as we have a digger too. Fortunately, the places that Outta has dug holes is either against the fence or the back shed where we plan on putting in flower beds this year. I figure she's just trying to tell my to get my green thumb to work and get something pretty planted by starting the holes for me lol

Oh oh. I hope Outta doesn't dig up the flowers once your've planted them - especially if she likes to dig in those spots. I've had that happen before - dogs are like rototillers. The flowers will be root side up or completely buried!

i have 2 diggers and they couldn't be happier! - i'd be really annoyed if they were digging in my lawn or garden, but we have a special fenced area just for them and they're welcome to go to it! - i fill in the holes regularly, but they just go somewhere else! - my excuse for allowing this behavior is that it keeps their nails trimmed really well right from spring through late fall - (or maybe i'm just really lazy!) - i have to watch between their pads that something doesn't get stuck, but that's not a big deal and it hasn't happened yet - if i remember correctly, one of my boys was returned for excess digging - oh well, we love them anyways - and it's the cutest thing to watch them dig dig dig and them plop into their hole - they look up at me like they're so proud of themselves! -

One of my greys also likes to dig, in our lawn. I think she is trying to dig her way to China with the size of holes she makes. We haven't had any luck getting her to stop so I was very glad to see this post.

all my dogs dig and we haven't found any way to stop them - just keep filling in the holes. They also eat the dirt when we put down the triple mix to fill in the holes in the grass. I guess lovely lawns and dogs don't belong in the same sentence. LOL

Some people have had success by making a sandbox in one area of their yard allowing their dogs to dig there, and correct if they try to dig elsewhere much the the same manner you would when your potty training

Does anyone have a nice lawn with flower beds and a greyhound. We had a beautiful back yard with great beds and nice grass. I can't even look when we let Zuzu out. The yard is turning into a track. No matter how often we exercise her she still runs loops when she goes out when we get home. However we love her to bits and wouldn't have it anyother way.

We are in the process of fencing off the part of our yard closest to the door, because the boys simply tear it up. We tried this last summer too, but frankly, I'm not sure how successful it was. I keep telling DH that we should just cement it over!!

I know what you mean rhyddpe. As soon as we let our grey out the door, he had to do a couple of laps and he nips at the other dogs if they get ahead of him. A sandbox or digging area might work, but our yard is really big and they find new areas to dig. We tried fencing off part of the yard one year to get the grass to grow, but they just jumped the fence to get to the back of the yard and we didn't want any of them to get the idea that they could jump so well or they might jump the side fences. I guess grass has to fight for itself.

Rene and I are doing our best on the backyard, but have resolved that there's not much that can be done to save the entire lawn. Uber and Echo are mad runners in the yard... complete with grass blobs flying everywhere. Atlas and Orion are wrestlers and do a pretty good job of tearing it up too. They love their yard too much to stop them from enjoying it. We'll continue to plant seeds (very expensive bird seed apparently), water and keep it going the best we can. OTOH, our front lawn is amazing. Curb appeal I guess.

well we had a beautiful back yard as well but I have to say it's alot more fun to watch a couple of greyhounds run and play and dig and just be plain silly than it is to watch grass grow. we also just put more seeds down and fill in the holes so it's not so bad.
