Emily has a routine vet appt this Thursday to do bloodwork to check her thyroid levels. She has been on a low dose thyroid med for about a year now so this is just to make sure there are no changes since the last blood work indicating any necessary tweaks to the dosage. I have decided to have a "senior bloodwork panel" to be done as well, as part of her yearly "wellness check". There is nothing obvious going on but I have a feeling that something is just not quite right. Emily is about 9 1/2 years old and has been home with me since July 2013. There has been quite a few changes in Emily's home life the past few months: I had to say goodbye to both my cats back in August (Daisy due to old age - she was 18 1/2 and Bernie suddenly 2 weeks later due to a blood clot - he was only 11). Then about 1 month ago my mom (who is 83) collapsed while walking Emily! Thankfully she only suffered scrapes & bruises and 2 of my neighbours kindly helped my mom & Emily back to my place where my dad was waiting, but as a result my mom has not been coming over at lunch hour during work days to walk Emily. Lastly, I did adopt a new cat, 6 year old " Andy" who is quite a character. He & Emily get along just fine (she ignores him) and he is getting use to what a dog is all about. So like I said there is nothing obvious going on with Emz, enjoying her walks, having normal bowel movements, drinking the same, still driving me crazy with eating great for 2 weeks then "self regulating" for a couple of days yet never turning down a treat, excited when we go to the farm. There is just some subtle changes - could just be an age factor plus the changes that have happened recently. But I thought I get full blood work done to rule out anything. Anyways, just thought I would ask fir some positive thoughts & energy to be sent Emily's way on Thursday. Thank you everyone.

First of all Carla, I would like to say I'm sorry for the loss of your Daisy and Bernie. 18 1/2 years is a long life, but it sure doesn't make it any easier. I was happy to read that your mom was okay after her spill, and I'm sure Emily misses her lunch time visits, a lot of changes recently for sure. We're sending positive thoughts and energy your way. Please keep us updated.

Lots of positive thoughts, vibes, prayers and everything else are being sent to Miss Emily for her visit to the Vet. She is just a gorgeous pup and has been through a lot of changes these past couple of months. I am sure she stood guard over your Mum when she collapsed on their noon-hour walk and happy to hear that your Mum is recuperating well. Emz, we will be thinking of you.

Carla, sending positive thoughts to your sweet Emz. By having a senior bloodwork panel done, you'll have peace of mind. Emily certainly has had many changes in her life recently and we all know how sensitive they can be when their routine has changed. Good luck tomorrow ... positive thoughts that everything is all fine. Hugs to your sweet pea ... (Glad to hear your Mom is okay too).

Good luck tomorrow! Hoping that everything goes smoothly at the vet. So sorry to hear of your loss of Bernie and Daisy. Really hard so close together. But happy that you have a new feline friend to keep you and Emz company. Sorry, too, that your mother has some health issues to contend with. Best wishes that she is doing much better after that episode.

Thank you everyone for your support! Just got off the phone with my vet. Emily's bloodwork shows perfect levels for her kidneys, liver, WBC, RBC etc! Unfortunately her thyroid levels have dropped. She is presently on .4mg pills taken twice a day and her levels last July were at 12. They are now at 7 which is even lower then when she was first tested. So her dose will be increased to .5mg and retested in 1 month. So overall it is good news as her condition is certainly treatable and just have to be monitored. I do recommend to anyone that has there greyhound tested for hypothyroidism that you make sure your vet is knowledgeable of a greyhound's "normal values". A complete T4/ FT4ED/TSH Thyroid 3 test must be done to determine all the levels. I am fortunate in that my vet is very greyhound savvy and we have gone through this before with my previous gal, Buffy. On another note, my mom is doing better. She has had many TIA's (mini strokes) over the years and is a stubborn 83 years old who does not like to go to the doctor! She is walking with a four footed cane now but will not be able to walk Emily anymore. This is hard on my mom as it really gave her a sense of purpose & got her out for some fresh air. Emily makes weekly visits to see Nana & Poppa now. Carla

Oh Emz, we are so happy to hear that your condition is treatable - and I know that you have a great Mom to look after you and Nana and Poppa to just love you to bits.

so glad the Emz is okay. Seems like thyroid issues go hand in hand with being female-two legged and four legged! I am sure that Emily's visits to Nana probably make mom feel so much better.
