Hi guys, I took our new guy Blue to the vet today, as he was having trouble with diarrhea and I saw worms in his poop the other day.( got heartworm med, dewormer, and metronidazole to help.... All will be fine!) I also pointed out that he had some skin lesions on his groin, with a fatty lump close by to it. They had a few people look at it, because they couldn't identify the cause of the lesions positively. I let them know that Heather told me that Blue had cryptorchidism (one testicle descended, only). They thought that the lesions could be from a laparoscopic procedure the previous vet did to look for the missing testicle, but now they are showing a discharge and they are not firm like scar tissue tends to be so they are not quite sure what they are. They did an ultrasound on the fatty lump, and surprise! it appears to be the missing testicle. Thankfully the ultrasound was free at the OVC clinic, as the lump had piqued the interest of several of the students and doctors. They are going to call the previous vet to see if he removed both testicles, and if they did any laparoscopic incisions near his groin. From there, we will schedule the removal of the lump/testicle and monitor what the lesions are doing. I am hoping that once the lump is gone, and his upset tummy and worms clear up, that Blue will be happier. He seems happy enough for a dude that has been with us for less than two weeks, but he is definitely 'off' , I feel. Hormones can play such a huge part in anyone's personality and outlook and I just want this guy to feel at ease.

That's a good thing that they found the testicle that was previously undescended, they can get cancerous if they aren't found and removed. Ostrander's will be able to fill in the blanks for your vet, I'm sure. Total score on the ultrasound, that saved some shekels for you!
The rest of Blue's issues are not uncommon in greyhounds transitioning to homes, sounds like you're on top of all of them. Blue is lucky to have you!
Let us know how he does!

I agree Melissa, you guys sound like you're right on top of things. Very impressed with the way OVC handled Blue's problems. Hopefully, very soon, he will be settled in all departments. M

Usually a vet will go looking for the remaining testicle as it is important that both testicles are removed. Maybe there were underlying concerns. Anyway, if the surgery goes ahead, will it be done through OVC? Hope all goes well, hugs to Blue.

I 100% agree that there could be lots of reasons that they did not remove both at the same time! I will say this, his remaining testicle is on the move! It moves around and becomes more visible and less visible as the day goes on. It also makes me think that this may be part of the reason we are having difficulty keeping up a decent pace during our walks at certain times of the day - perhaps it causes a bit of discomfort as it gets bonked around? Word on the street is that testicles aren't something that feel very good when they get banged around poor guy. We will definitely have his surgery done through the OVC. Some people may not like that the surgery could be assisted by students, however they have really amazing equipment and the care the animals receive is stellar. The surgeries are performed by the 4th year students alongside a licensed vet. I highly recommend them, they aren't pushy with procedures or vaccines, and spend a LOT of time with you and your pet.

Was your vet in touch with Ostrander vet clicks?? I spoke with my vet today and she confirmed that the testicle was removed!!!! Better do some more research before they do anything to him. Did they even think to call Ostrander vet clinic to discuss this??

A few years back.. ok, maybe near on 10. There was a gorgeous fawn boy at GRA who was neutered upon adoption.. two testicles removed by normal methods and no complications. He bounced about four or five months later, and you could see that his scrotum had "something in it". Yup, he actually had THREE testicles in total. The vet re-neutered him and he was sent off to his next home. Stranger things have happened. LOL
Good luck to Blue on a quick and easy surgery.

My completely uneducated guess is that he has three testicles, as well! I always knew this guy was special .

Have you scheduled surgery yet? And I wouldn't have any hesitation either to have the testicle removed by 4th year students. The surgery and post operative treatment will be excellent. Hugs to your boy.

I talked to our vet today, and after much deliberation and consultations with various vets on campus, (including a reproductive specialist), word is that Blue is not sporting a third dingleberry. That being said, they really aren't sure what it could be. It may be a hernia, with a piece of intestine that bulges through the abdominal wall, or it could be a fatty mass, or it could be a tumour (benign or not). They are sending me quotes for all of my options, of which include a variety of specialists and additional ultrasounds. I'm thinking my pocketbook will be the limiting factor here, and we may have to go with garden variety exploratory surgery. If it's a hernia, then they would stitch it up, and if it was a mass of any kind then they would remove it. It does not appear to be bothering him presently, so the vet feels we have time to weigh our options. I still think Blue is special, even if he only has/had the standard # of boy parts.

Melissa, I'm happy and sad to learn of this news. No matter what it is, it's a worry and we feel for you. We're all keeping positive thoughts for Blue and I'm sure all will be well in no time. M

Poor Blue...so much going on for a new adoptee and his family... I was thinking 3rd testicle too, until reading it is not. I hope all goes well w/ whatever treatment path you choose to take, and know that he is in the most excellent of care @ OVC.

Hi guys! We are taking Blue back to the vet in mid-august after the boys finish their vacation at the Hound Haven. We'll be scheduling his surgery shortly after that. His lump hasn't been visible for a while , but if it's a hernia then it makes sense that it would come and go. Other than that, the new kid is doing really well! He is pretty darn delightful, despite his selective hearing , and we are working on his comfort level on our walks. He is definitely a nervous guy when he is away from our home , on walks. It feels like we are dragging him down the street most of the time. Neighbours have commented that they didn't think there could actually be a dog who is slower than Mercury, but we found one!
