We were rescued by Dexter (Super C Joker) 4 months ago. He came to us with a bald chest and stomach and the underside of his legs are bald as well. Never having had a pure grey before I thought this was normal but I am learning it is not. Also, he has a lot of dandruff and he is shedding a great deal. He is starting to get bald patches on the outside of his hind legs. I have read it could be thyroid, I have read it could be omega 3 deficiency, I have been told a raw food diet (I tried but I can not keep up with that). Anyone else have a grey that has had this problem? I read the info Toronto Tony posted on coconut oil, very informative, I have just started introducing the CO to the kibble. Any other suggestions or words of advice?

There is a product by ubervet that is an omega 3 oil spray for their food. My neighbours give this to their saluki. When we adopted Georgia, we were advised that she was being given 1000mg of fish oil - Kirkland - by Costco - the type intended for humans. Now she and I each take one capsule a day. When she doesnt gobble it down, I cut it in half an toss it in with her kibble.
Her rump hair has grown in... her neck is still quite bare.
We had her thyroid tested and she's fine...

Jed came home with a completely bare neck and back legs. He also has a bare belly. He had bad dandruff too and started to blow his coat about 3 months in. It's now just over a year and his neck is fully covered with hair but not his tummy or back legs. Dandruff all gone now too. I give my boys the fish oil and just start with Coconut oil.
Jed has a very different coat then Ghost. He has much finer fur and hardly sheds. Ghost sheds tonnes and his coat is very thick. I think he has an undercoat and Jed does not. I know greys can have varying coat types. I think it takes quite a lot of time for the hair to grow in and Jed 's never will and he's perfectly healthy. I love kissing his bare tummy!

I love petting his bare tummy, Vet got the results back and Dexter is fine, no thyroid issues, so I will pick up some fish oil to go along with the coconut oil and just wait. He doesn't seem to be bothered by the "nakedness" and my (bald) husband reminds me there is nothing wrong with being bald. I just want to make sure I am doing everything I can for Dexter. Thank-you for sharing your experiences.

Just be careful if giving both fish oil and the coconut oil, monitor their stool as it may get really soft, that's a sign you need to pull back.
My guy is bare in those same spots too, maybe I should consider O3 oil also and replace the coconut with it. I am right now rubbing coconut oil into his bald elbows as they were a little leathery from just rubbing over the years, and also his paws because he's getting more walking now than he did at the kennel

some greyhounds remain bald whatever you do so don't be too disappointed if your dog is one of those.

What rubielottie14 said. Some greys are thick and furry, others have thin coats with bald spots. With greyhounds, baldness is not a sign of thyroid issues... one of many differences of greyhounds vs. other breeds. Put it this way, my super hairy, thick double coated boy, Atlas, had an almost non-functioning thyroid for years. He also lost weight where he should have gained. It was actually the sudden weight loss that prompted us to test his blood.
