Hi Guys,
I'm planning ahead for my new friend.
Having had dogs in the past, I've always fed them two capsules of either Flax oil or Salmon oil (rotated to avoid the mercury, 1000mg caps) per day with their two meals as I found this improved their coat, and staved off dandruff. I also take them, and that makes things easier (obviously human grade stuff, same he/she would be getting)
From what I have read greys tend to have dry skin, is this a good regime to keep or something to be avoided as they may be sensitive?
I've also usually settled on a grain free (or close to) dry kibble that includes a high amount of fish (again, for the oil) any thoughts on this?
Thanks ahead
J

It's fantastic seeing all the planning you're doing to make things comfortable for your soon-to-be houndie!
I regularly give Booker salmon oil, it certainly makes his coat much smoother! It took his digestion a bit of time to catch up, things were... pretty sloppy for a little while. He adjusted, and his gas isn't quite as bad(thank goodness) as it was when we first got him.
Food wise, it sounds like you've got a good plan! Grain free is a good way to go, try to make sure it doesn't have soy, since that'll make them even gassier. And you don't want that. Ever. Eugh. Many candles have given their lives in the attempt to stave off the gas in our household. And keep in mind that al the best food planning might go right out the window based on the tummy of the hound you end up with! But be patient, give time for them to adjust, and you'll figure it out!

Thanks for the reply, if anyone is wondering, I was referring to Origin, fortunately I can get it at a decent cost locally. This is what I fed my last dog who had stomach issues, but I guess every dog is different and I'll just have to wait and see

So with you on the gas issue Tipsy! Even my young kids yell "Ew! Dog farts!" when a funky smell appears in the living room

I've always given omega supplements and never had issues. I don't know if it improves coat quality, but omega 3's have so many other benefits that you can't necessarily see (heart health, joint health, etc.). I wouldn't worry too much about feeding a fish kibble for the omega benefit. Oils are sensitive to light, air and heat, so I never trust that a processed food contains quality oils, even if it claims to on the bag. I always add fresh

I really recommend the Orijen Regional Red! it worked wonders for Renny's digestion and "gas problems" haha and he seems to do very well on it weight wise
