This has probably been asked a lot but how long did it take for your greyhound to come out of it's shell in their new forever home? I don't remember our last one taking very long but so far it seems like this one's gonna take a bit of time. It's only been three days so far and each day I see a little more spirit but I still don't see any real confidence and may not for a while yet. I know I know, it's worth the wait.

We have had Josh for 2 months now. He's just starting to come out of his shell now! Anyway, I think they change all the time and I love it!

Almost 6-8 months to REALLY come out. Suli was also a bit....... Special lol. We have notice a big change just in the past few months, she is really affectionate and is beginning to trust other people.

I think they are all different. Scully was very timid and it took months. Even though he has been home now for over a year (can't believe it's only that long) I see something new every day. Some days he won't approach people on the street. other days he walks up to them like he has known them forever.
I think they like to keep us guessing.

It varies a lot, but mostly 6-12 months. Betsy, who has been here 8 years, still surprises me occasionally. She started to chatter at about the 6 1/2 _year_ mark. Who knew?
ETA: They usually settle in and figure out the routine way earlier, but I'd say the rate of change slows in the 6-12 month range for most. At one point I had 3 suddenly start to seem much happier and more relaxed within a month of each other, all within 6-9 months after they got here.

It took Liza about a year to fully come out of her shell. She was always very aloof (but quite sweet) and now she just makes my heart sing. It really and truly is worth the wait no matter how long it takes.

It depends a lot on the hound, but in general, the honeymoon is over around the 6 week mark, that's when you usually start to see the real hound. That being said, my Romi walked in, hopped up on the couch and was his authentic self pretty much from day 1. His brother Cantankerous Lou took a year before he would approach me for pettings. Quite a range! And as GreyPoopon says, they really do continue to evolve throughout their lives, and can surprise you after years of retirement.

Greyhounds are pack animals, have always lived with either their littermates or other greyhounds until the time comes for them to be released from the track. This is a whole new world that Trout is now in ... new sights, sounds, smells, food, rules, etc. For him, it is a challenging life adjustment from the racing kennel to the family domicile. And maybe for the first time in his life, he finds himself with a lack of confidence (temporary), for he is truly out of his realm. This is where it takes each greyhound "time" to process and adapt to his new surroundings and people. Be patient, he will come around when he is ready. Just love him, encourage him and he'll do fine.
You could always get him a grey sister/brother ... that would sure boost his confidence ... he he he!!!!

I just don't remember this stage. Probably because looking back it seemed like a short time. I know he'll come around. Next challenge - stairs.

trout I see you're in Kincardine. My parents have a cottage in Point Clark. We always took Mr Max to a local ball diamond to stretch his legs. If you're interested in meeting up some time this summer perhaps PM me. We can pick a diamond and introduce the boys. I'll make sure we pack Thunder's muzzle.

Sparrow adapted quite quickly. She seemed to trust us almost immediately. Within a few months, she had become very used to her new routines and very polite with our small dog. The first month we had her she stole a few things off the kitchen counter which we thought was really cute since we new she had no clue about the house rules yet but since then she has been the politest house pet. However, there was a very specific moment that sticks out in our minds when we could tell that she felt at home and that was when she started running up to the kids' bedrooms and bringing down all their stuffed animals to play with in the living room. She began playing with toys and surrounding herself with stuffed animals within 6 to 8 weeks. She has been with us for 8 months. I honestly can't believe how incredible these dogs are. We are so lucky to have her. I think of Bill and his team all the time. Without them we would never have had the chance to have the most incredible, sensitive, sweet, gorgeous greyhound.
