Two days ago Rain managed to climb up the side of a book-case and snagged a box of cookies with raisins in them and ate most of the box. This afternoon she threw up A LOT - seemed to be mostly grass and bile but my husband, who cleaned it up, said it also looked like oatmeal cookie. She did NOT get dinner tonight as she threw up as my husband was preparing their dinners. Any suggestions as to what we should do now?? I'm inclined to have her fast overnight then give her a small amount of raw hamburger with lots of rice tomorrow morning. All input will be greatly appreciated.

I would love to advise you correctly on that one. Sorry that I can't. All I know is that my guy would puke and still eat and then be ok.
Best of luck!

im not an expert but from what i know theres 4 things dogs dont handle well chocolate, tomatoes, onions and grapes. it probably really upset his stomach wit the raisins. im not sure if the raisins would have the same effect because of dehydration and so forth but i know dogs tummy dont do so well with grapes. when blitz ate chocolate i fed her and tried to flush it through her system with her regular food and a raw bone to see if it would balance her upset tummy. again no expert so im not sure what SHOULD be done but that was my rationale. good luck! if he keeps throwing up a lot maybe a vet?

Here's a link to the 24-hr. ASPCA animal poison control centre. It costs up to $65/call I think it said: www.aspca.org/pet-care/poison-control/Here's another animal poison control line, $35/call: www.petpoisonhelpline.com/I don't know how many raisins a dog would have to eat for it to be toxic, but if Rain is throwing up, obviously that's a sign that it's had at least some effect on her so it might be a good idea to either call the help line, maybe they can tell you want to do, or take her to a vet. Greyhounds may be different from other dogs also; I'd guess they'd react more easily to less toxins than other breeds might but I really don't know. Even if she seems okay, I think that the kidneys/liver can be affected later -- again, I don't know, but a vet or poison control could tell you more.

She has thrown up again - then eaten more grass, so she's cleaning herself out. She's not to happy about missing dinner but if no more symptoms show up, she'll get breakfast. I checked a few websites and raisins CAN be deadly - depends on how much she had and it seems she had enough to make her sick but that's all. We'll keep an eye on her.

Poor Rain! My guess is that her system was overloaded with sugar & carbs along with raisins not being good for animals so her gut had to "unload" it. What are her BM's like? I think your wise to fast her and then start back with bland diet. Are all of her vitals otherwise normal? Poor Gary too..what a mess to clean up!

I'm sure she'll be fine. A friend's grey ate an entire bag of onions and lived to tell the tale without vet intervention.

Rain was throwing up again last night, so we took her to the vet this morning. She got a complete physical, including a blood panel and physically she is fine. They gave her an anti-emetic to stop her throwing up so she should back to normal soon. She has lost 2 lbs since Oct. 19 when she was weighed last and she'll be on a diet of rice and boiled chicken for awhile.

Carol ... so glad you had Rain checked out and that all is going to be fine. We sure do worry about our hounds, don't we?

Carol I am sure Rain will gain that weight back in no time. I hope the med takes effect soon for her. Scritches to your youngster.

Thanks for your concern folks!! Your support is always much appreciated. Rain is back to her old cheeky, perky self - just 2 lbs lighter so we'll increase her food gradually until she's not showing so many ribs.
