These stories crack me up! Most adults have been really good about identifying my greys as greys. Or they just ask what kind of dog Ozzy is.
The funny confusion comes from kids! At our old apartment, we stepped off the elevator with Ozzy and a little boy (who was about as tall as Oz) said, "look, mommy! A real zebra!" haha (Ozzy is brindle).
My friend's 3 year old was seeing Ozzy and Catie for the first time, and they poked their head out of the bedroom when he first arrived. He saw them and exclaimed "Horsies!" haha.
I really don't blame kids for making the mistakes! Greys are pretty big!

Everyone in my neighborhood was use to seeing me walking Chicky so now when they see me with Buffy they do a double take because of the colour difference (Chicky was a red fawn, Buffy a dark brindle). So although there is no confusion of the breed (I am known as the Greyhound Lady), for what ever reason Buffy gets mistaken for a male! I guess Chicky looked very feminine but clearly Buffy has no male equipment and shows definite signs of being a Broodie but I guess not everyone checks out a dog's underside!
She does remind me of an Egyptian type jackal at times! It is her big ears that she often has standing on full alert mode that does it.

The breed confusion makes me laugh. Just last night we were asked if Frog was a Doberman. Usually we hear whippet and we get deer a lot ( her colouring is very similar and I'm sure the deer we have run into on our walks are just as confused lol). I even had someone show great concern over her ears. Frog tends to flip them inside out and the guy was upset for her because he thought they were damaged.

We get mistaken for a Great Dane all the time - but funny story, we walked by 2 young kids walking with their mom: Kid: "Mommy when we go home can we draw a picture of that dog?" Mom: (laughing) "of course honey." Kid: "He looks like a dragon."

I had a little boy ask me if Trip was a "hyena from Africa." I told him no, he is a greyhound. He was born in Texas. He asked if Texas was in Africa. He looked disappointed and skeptical when I said no.

So I am on my third greyhound now and live in a condo complex. Everyone is accustomed to seeing me walk my dog everyday several times. My one neighbour stopped me the first week Imhad Emily home and said " nice to see you out walking again, this must be your new dog. Did you get a Saluki this time?" I was actually kind of amazed that he even new what a Saluki was as you certainly don't see many of them.

I had a kid point to Jerry once and say to his mom, "Look mom an anteater"! That was pretty funny.

Hahaha, these stories are amazing! I'm sure I'm annoying my boyfriend by reading them all out loud and laughing! Mostly Booker just gets confused for a whippet, but I'm happy to explain that they're very similar breeds and that this is a much better dog. I've had great dane a few times, but I think some of that might just be confusing the name of the breeds, rather than the breed itself - heck, once I nearly called him a great dane! But like others, mostly we just get compliments that he's handsome/cute/gorgeous, which they're entirely right about! <3

I get a lot of confused looks (mostly from school aged kids) and the question "is that a dog?" Also "is it like, mixed with a tiger or something? I didn't know they could do that..."
I also regularly get whippet (she's 70lbs - literally twice the size of a whippet...), great dane (really? Haven't they seen the 200lb dane that lives in the building?), doberman (she's brindle...c'mon people), dachshund (seriously?!), bugle? (I think she meant beagle, but again, what?!), basset hound (good grief!) hyena...from a grown adult type person *sigh*, and once from an old man who has clearly never seen one before, irish wolfhound.
I also got galgo from a random latino guy waiting for his friend in front of my building, and I do on occasion run onto people who are familiar with the greyhound because of the logo on the side of the greyhound busses, or because they are popular hunting dogs "back home".

I have laughed myself silly many times reading this thread. I, too, have had a few off-center questions as to breed, but last night's inquiry temporarily topped my personal list of odd ones. Late evening walk and young lady and boyfriend pass Joker & Light and I. She asks..."oh my...are they dachshunds??". "Umm...no" I say and somehow keep a straight face and explain. I leave thinking...woah..tallest dachshunds on record?? Half way home it dawns on me... Did she mean 'dash'-hounds??
