When I finally went to Bill's to pick out a dog, I went there expecting to get a boy. I'd heard the males were more outgoing and since I could only have one dog, I thought an outgoing boy would be more likely to bond with me. I had a name all picked out - Rory - and I hadn't changed my mind about it for almost 3 weeks (a record!) And then when I got there, I didn't hit it off with any of the boys. I decided I'd have to come back another day.
But just before I got ready to go, I saw this little fawn girl looking up at me from a crate in the back under a sign that read "Chicky". She'd only arrived the day before. I went over and let her out before I realized that she was in a cast. I tried to catch her and put her back in because I didn't know if she should be walking on the bad leg, but she was already gone - zipping down the isle, three-legging it towards my boyfriend, Andrew, and Bill. Her tail was wagging so hard that she was knocking herself off balance, but she barely noticed. Huge grin on her face, she ran around like life was just the biggest, most exciting thing ever. I'd found my outgoing, people-oriented, friend.
As you may or may not have gathered, I am a huge Doctor Who fan. I love the show because it reminds me that life is short and that the best way to live it is to love hard, embrace spontaneity, and go on every adventure you can. On the show, Rory is a companion that exemplifies loyalty and patience and, well, I'd always thought the actor looks a bit like a greyhound (it's the nose). On the show he's called "the boy who waited." I had no problem naming a female dog Rory, and I thought about naming her that. The dog that picked me, however, was way too much of a go-getter, too much of a thrill-seeker to be a Rory. So, instead I named her after River Song. She's spunky, self-assured, friendly, and always a bit of a mystery. It's my River to a T.
I can't say that I named her something related to her track name because I didn't make the connection until someone else pointed it out to me afterwards. River's track name was Iruska Cool Chic. Cool Chic is certainly a fitting description of River Song, even if it doesn't exactly describe my boisterous goofball of a dog
