Very interesting thread!
It will be 2 years this Labour Day weekend that we got our girl from GRA. Her racing name was "Nokomis Nurse" and call name was "Lulu". Can't really do much with either of those monikers! Ick. Can you see me at a park yelling "Here, Nurse!" LMAO!
Though I do recall that in that poem "Hiawatha" in grade school there was some line about "daughter of the Moon - Nokomis" was there not?
Anyway....before we started dog searching, I had a dream that I found a caramel coloured dog at a pound (a mutt - not a grey!) and had named her BLISS. I woke up, thinking what a strange name that would be for a dog...and then over the next few months kept seeing that word EVERYWHERE. Bliss chocolates....Paul Bliss the weather guy on TV...some tanning product feels like BLISS on your skin...it just stuck with me so I when we got our girl I was adamant her name would be Bliss. Sigh. Hubby HATED it. My second choice he was happy with...Sierra. She knew it in two days!

Well I think Mary has the worst racing name "Idiot Box". What is with that! Poor thing I don't even want to mention it. Her call name was Contrary Mary. Her prior owner kept Mary so we did as well.
We renamed CPs Lightning Troy but he also comes to Lightning so we call him by both names.

Well, we have Eighty which is actually a number my daughter has pointed out (she's 11 so it was more of a sarcastic remark). His kennel name was 83 which Bill said was his race weight. I felt 83 was a bit of a mouthful so I shortened it to Eighty (and did you notice I now spell it out ) Then of course our new boy was Spots Available and was called Spots and we kept that because it couldn't be more fitting! He is now known mostly as Spotters because what would a dog's name be without 2 syllables!!!!

Our Murphy was Osceola Merrill, sounds half indian and half country western singer, how we came up with Murphy I have no idea, he just looks like a Murphy and I am Irish. Henry's race name was BB's Hey Hey Hey, not much you can do with that. His call name was Henry and I thought that fit him well.

IDIOT BOX has a sibling named HUNGUP GOBBLERS. I wonder what the owner was drinking when he named these dogs??? LOL !!! Maybe they had a contest to come up with the NUTTIEST names.

I'd been waiting to adopt a grey for ages...so hubby and I already had the name 'Halo' picked out months before she was home! I had told a few people of the name choice, with mixed reviews. I guess there's a video game called Halo, there's a dog food by Ellen (I hadn't even made that connection - and I work at a pet food store and we have it!). Anyway - I had my heart set on this name, and my husband didn't hate it (and he hated lots of other suggestions I had) so we went ahead with it. It might sound cheesy, but I thought what better name for our little angel than Halo? We were waiting to finish a renovation at home before bringing a grey into the mix here, but I was having a hard time waiting. As soon as the end of the reno was in sight, I was checking the adopt-ables page daily! Because I have rabbits, cats and a little white fluffy dog, I had thought it would be best to go out when there were lots of dogs to choose from so we'd have better odds of finding a good match. Well - that went out the window when I fell in love with a picture on the web page and there was only a handful of girls there! Her call name was Haley (pretty close to Halo) so I figured it was a match made in heaven! Well, turns out Haley was already spoken for, so I asked to see our second choice, "Annie" TJ's Andros. "Annie" just sounded to close to Benny for our pom (who is pretty, not bright and she didn't seem to know it anyway, so Halo it is. The only trouble I have now, is that my brother's grey is Sola (her kennel name, from Djays So Late) and I keep getting Sola & Halo confused. It's a mouthful! Anyway - she is definitely our little angel, and couldn't be happier! Alana

Our dog is Primo Dash and we calll her Dash. A lot of people think it is an appropriate name for her. Dash never raced, she prefers to chase, and does not seem to want to be number one.

Our first grey which we got from Bill was named "Jake Hallo" but Bill renamed him as he was driving back from the U.S. to take him to his farm when he drove by a town in N.Y. called "Herkimer"...somehow, Bill thought this would be a nice new name for Jake and when we got to the kennel, "Herkimer" was waiting for us...We asked the kids at the time if they would prefer keeping the name "Jake" or "Herkimer" which I fully believed they would want the shorter name, but they surprised me when they said without hesitation let's keep the name "Herkimer"!!!! Herkimer was with us while our kids grew up and passed away at the ripe age of almost 13 years old! We miss him!
Our other 2 greys, well, we kept their racing names but shortened them a bit...Witty Boy became plain old "Witty" and Iruska Full House became "House"....People often ask us if "House" was taken from the show Dr. House on television which always makes me laugh because they expect House to be one grumpy wacky character which he certainly isn't! Makes for some interesting conversation!
I think it's very personal to either keep the name of change it...I always feel a little bad to change it much (other than for Herkimer of course) when they are older dogs and have been use to hear the same name for so many years and to change it might be a bit confusing...but I'm probably wrong on that one! LOL!

I changed my grey's name to something completely different. His racing name was Cactus Gold. I changed his name to Trip because that's what he likes to do to me and everybody else. It's hard to keep nail polish on my toes since he is always standing on my feet. He also likes to be a 70 lb roadblock in the doorway.

Booker's racing name was McNectar... Nectar felt like a clumsy word to over-use, and he didn't look like a "Mick" or "Mickey", so we spent a day throwing around different ideas.
Three other names we were considering were Batou(a character from a show), Fry(after a joking suggestion of Friar Tuck), and Trip(which now I laugh at seeing the other pup named Trip on this forum). When my boyfriend suggested Booker(also named after a character), I fell in love with it immediately!
We've only had him named for three days, so he's only really responding to it as well as any other noise, but that's about the same as when we try to call him Nectar, so we don't feel bad changing it at all.

Ghost's racing name is Abby's Ghost. When we picked him up Bill said " I sure hope your going to keep his name Ghost" . We did and it fits him perfectly since he's almost all white.
Hubby and I have decide to keep some form of their racing name for any new pup that comes into our lives (unless absolutely ridiculous).
Jed's racing name is Jeds Josh. When we adopted him he was known as Josh. We kept that for awhile however we prefer to call him Jed .

Interesting to see that most owners (55.5%) have given their houndies names completely different than their racing names. However our most recent adoptee is TNJ RAIN and has retained the name RAIN as it fits into our "Weather Girls" names of Stormy and Sunny.

Our guy's racing name was UCME Warp Speed. We decided on something different. We chose "Raj" as we are "Big Bang Theory" fans and our guy is brindle: "melt in your mouth caramel" as the t.v. character describes himself! It also means "king of kings" which we thought was befitting of our guy. Variations include "Rajee" or "Rajee-Roo". Enjoy the naming process! Kathryn
