Haha! Yep, it was a shock to me too! I think I actually guffahed out loud when I opened the lab results! And not to worry, I think "grocker" seems to have caught on in my family as her little nickname Lisa Modified to add that my mother came up with a breed name for her...a Grey Rocker

Wow, that was a shocker!! Not sure what I would have guessed there. How cool that they can do a test like that?? Did you just send a saliva sample?

Wow, that was a shocker!! Not sure what I would have guessed there. How cool that they can do a test like that?? Did you just send a saliva sample? The sample is from a cheek swab, actually 2. There are the Q-tip looking things that come in the package (sealed) for you to swab the inside of your dog's mouth, so it didn't hurt at all. Kawaii started to try to lick it to help.LOL! I think she thought I was brushing her teeth In case others are interested for their non-pure greyhounds, here is the link to the company that you can order the test from. When you get it, follow the instructions to the T, and then send it off to the lab. Both the company and the lab are in the US. mojopet.com/shop/product_info.php/products_id/488?gclid=CLe9i5rSjZYCFQOIFQodIy6rFALet me know if anyone gets interesting results. I would imagine it would also be fun to do with kids, to show them science at work just like on TV. Never know, it could be a future science fair project in the making! Lisa P.S. There are limits to the test. For example, it can't differentiate between types of cocker spaniel - English or American, so it gives the general group. Or if the breed that your dog is mixed with isn't in their database, the test will indicate further back to a common ancestor between the 2 breeds, but still, pretty darn good. Modified to add the PS.

Thank you to the scientific judges who selected my answer, not that it was even close.

Wow. I wouldn't have guessed in a million years. And, like greyhoundfan, I'm a little confuzzled as to how.
Just as an aside: a student at the school I take the girls to has a really nice mixed breed--looks like a Doberman X hound (the owner thinks coon hound). The owner sent in a sample, and the results were Doberman, Chihuahua (!), and--mostly--unknown.

Yeah, the "how" is a bit of a head scratcher. Someone was very determined it seems. Years ago my mom and dad had a short little dog, only about the height of a dachshund, and it got loose one day. Well, needless to say when she came back, she had been visiting with a tall friendly lab at the neighbouring farm. A litter of puppies sure showed that they figured out a way how! LOL! I guess it is a case of where there's a will, there's a way! We have no idea how or why a pure greyhnd and a c.spaniel crossed paths...maybe the spaniel was the family pet of grey owners and a whoops happened...but then that would be 50%/50%. She is clearly more grey than that & the DNA results indicate that too. Was someone trying to breed the "whoops" out over a couple more generations with pure greys? Seems like a lot of work for no reason if they already had pure greys. Wouldn't be worth it for racing, so why bother? All very odd. Someone's attempt at a designer dog as a pet?? Who knows. Like with everything in life, you get an answer to one question, only to find out it leads to more questions - how AND why? Lisa

Yes, I forgot to mention that: the other thing that I don't get is why: if it was a mistake, why keep going; if not, what exactly is supposed to come from the cocker spaniel side? I thought one of the main reasons for breeding lurchers is to add stamina, but I'd have thought something other than a cocker spaniel could provide that and maybe some other more helpful characteristics (more helpful than a waggy tail and long ears, for example).

Yep, the why's are endless. No ideas that couldn't be done through mixing with other breeds... making smaller - lots of other options making skin sturdier - lots of other options more stamina - certainly lot of other options more playful? - ditto C.Spaniels are: certainly not faster certainly not more laid back certainly not quieter than greys, so why? Cockers are originally a gun dog and if they wanted that added to the mix there are other options too. The other option is that she isn't actually mixed with a cocker but with another type of spaniel that the testing database didn't have and the c. spaniel is the closest match. But again why a spaniel of any kind. Maybe someone just did it 'because'. LOL! I'll leave you all to ponder this while you sleep. I for one am heading to bed and will sleep soundly with my silly little girl nearby. Lisa
