I was not sure where to put my vote. Scully does the stairs on the deck and the three steps into the house. But in the two and a halt years he has lived here he has never gone down the basement stairs yet.

I had to vote that Teia is learning like a pro (although I wouldn't describe it as graceful yet, lol)- Day 5 and she just needs a little bit of help to get going upstairs/downstairs - no treats necessary and our stairs are hardwood! Outside stairs are no problem. Maybe it's easier because she's so petite?

I had written in about this before because we were struggling with the stair situation. Our grey would not do stairs inside or out, up or down. We were carrying our 86lb dog up and down the two flights of stairs. I finally got him to go up the stairs by putting his lease on him and gently coaxing him up each stair. I also put a treat on each stair. Then he could get up on his own but not down. Since he follows me everywhere, he would come up with me when I was running up to get a forgotten item but would not come down. He would sit at the top of the stairs and cry so I would have to carry him down. I got out all my rubber back bath mats and put them on the stairs so they were not slippery (our stairs are hardwood and not carpeted). I moved him one leg at a time down the stairs for the first 4 steps and he finished the last 4 on his own. He was slow and tentative for the first couple of trips but after that he had it and became completely independent at climbing and going down the steps.
Now, just have to figure out how to get him to jump. He will not jump up onto the bed. If he can not step up onto something he will not jump. So he lays front half of his body on the bed with his hind legs still on the floor and looks at us pathetically until one of us gives in and lifts him up on the bed. What a nut, we love him. so glad he picked us.

Crafty learned in a day. She was a pro! She didn't like porcelain stairs or marble, but hey I don't either.
