In light of a conversation I was reading on the forum about worms, and the fact that digby has gotten both hookworm and roundworm, I thought it would be interesting to see what sort of frequency greys are getting parasites. I also thought it would be interesting to see whether the dogs tend to to acquire a parasite during the transitional process (stress perhaps makes them susceptible?)
fyi, we found digby had hookworm pretty shortly after adopting, and then he got roundworm a couple months later. I wonder whether greys are susceptible or he was just under stress?

Tapeworm is what three of ours came home with. Pretty common occurence in any kennel situation.

Betsy had tapeworm. We decided to give Edie the meds without awaiting the evidence. Edie had salmonella. We didn't find it right away, but it doubtless had been there since her racing days.

At adoption Hope had whipworm, Hotwire had tapeworm, and Connor had tapeworm and roundworm. Connor is a poo-eater, so I know he is a bit at risk for picking up a parasite, but the poo-eating seems to be slowing down, I am hoping it was only a sign of stress from his adoption.
They haven't picked up anything since, although the whipworm took forever to get rid of in Hope.

Ace had tapeworm that showed up a week after he came home, then hookworm and roundworm showed up in the 2nd week. All is well now (knock on wood). Must have been the kennel life along with stress.

Jerry and Fern never had any parasites, Jane had tapeworm shortly after getting her. Jane also had fleas and they are know carriers of tape worm.

Jake had hookworm about 3 months after he came home. I was living in an apartment complex at the time which had green space between the buildings...it was a poop mine! Because he had it I treated my other dog for it as well.

Tony had hookworm and we've gone through 2 series of panacur. I hope that's it.

Charm had tapeworm and fleas..as mentioned above, the vet says that's pretty normal and we had no problem dealing with it.

Ty came home with both round and tapeworm ... my vet said it is very common and both were easily treated. He hasn't had any issues since.

Hobbes came home with tapeworm. It was pretty nasty as I could see them moving in his stool. He was wormed and he has been parasite free since.

Has anyone had any problem with lungworm? I've read that it's not uncommon in retired racers, but noone here has mentioned it. If Gini's reverse sneezing comes back, I'll have her tested for it, because it's apparently a cause. My guys had fleas, but no worms that I can recall. Don't recall a treatment, except that the Advantage they're on for fleas etc also covers a couple of other varieties of parasite.

Sorry to resurrect this unpleasant topic but I am curious about a couple things:
1) What treatments did you use? Length of treatment time?
2) What did you do to prevent it from spreading either to you or other pets in your homes?
Thanks, Lisa

For Meme she had giardia when she came home, I can't remember the name of the medicine but I believe she had to take two pills a day, not mixed with food until the bottle was finished and than they took another stool sample after to make sure she was ok.
To prevent it our vet gave us some information on preventing it, and it said first to make sure you clean their beds etc, really well, along with the floors that their resting on with bleach.
