When we are on the beach, we have to harness our puppy Lincoln, he just goes crazy on the sand. In the house they wear only their tag collars with their tags on them. We have their martingale collars attatched to their leashes, so when we go out or go walking, we just slip them on.

So I had a bit of a scare over Christmas. I was walking Ty and a lab puppy kept pulling his owner towards Ty and barking. Ty freaked and managed to twist and get one ear out of his collar. Of course this is eight at night on Christmas Eve so nothing open to get a harness. I get home and ask hubby for any suggestions. He looks at all our collars and leashes. Then he says "do you use this coupler?' (I had bought it thinking it would be easier to walk both together - NOT). He said for now try putting both his martingales on him the coupler attached to each collar and then if he gets out of one you still have the other. It works great he actually doesn't get excited at other dogs - for now but I AM getting a harness for him. Where do you get a good quality one (our pet store has kinda cheap ones) and how do you fit them? Thanks Tara (nervous nelly) I have a martingale escape artist as well no matter how snug I make the collar, the first harness I bought was a seatbelt padded harness but with greyhound their body shape just does not allow it to fit snuggly Later found the premier greyhound sure fit harness inexpensive fits good, and slides do not slip The Gem store carries them in several colours and theri shipping is very reasonable www.gemgreyhounds.org/gem_store/collars&leashes.htmI have been using mine for almost 5 years with 2 different spooks and quite happy with

All of my fur kids wear martingale collars with their tags at all times. I would not want a dog out on the loose without any identification. These things can happen so fast! ! ! !. However, they are lnot tightly fitted around their neck.

Sybil wears her martindale all the time and she does not really like it when i take it off for longer than a good neck rub/scratch. She is used to it so it is kind of like a part of her. Our vet suggested at the beginning to leave it on her all the time so that she is used to it and does not try to remove it. We don't ever want to grab hold of her and have nothing to grab Ie: at the door, etc. Speaking of martindales, does anyone know where we can buy them? We got one with our dog from GRA but I can't find more like he gave out..the 1 in or so size.

Check out the Merchandise thread, there are many vendors who sell martingales and most of them can do a 1 inch plain if you'd rather.

This will give you something to grab hold of if need be, it keeps them 'used to' a collar, and prevents any choking/strangling hazards that a martingale would if they got caught on something. We only use martingales for walks, Ava wears her tag collar 24/7. I am looking into a harness bc she likes to do zoomies while we're out and I'd hate to see her injure her neck/back when she gets frisky and I have to calm her down.

We've got both but I am much more partial to the harness. I find that I have more control when we have to pass other dogs and if we go out with the group for a walk Charm turns into a huge puller so she doesn't choke herslf with the harness. I keep the martingale in the closet beside the door so I can grab it quick when someone comes to the door...(.the muzzle is there too in case I think it's a solicitor ..nice intimidation factor HeeeHeeeHeee..but that's another thread.)

Dodge has a harness but we rarely use it, we bought it so we could teach him stairs and not have him fall. Sophie on the other hand, NEEDS a harness or else she'll pull you EVERYWHERE but the minute the harness goes on, pulling ends instantly.

Max wears a break-away collar in the house and yard but a harness with a martingale collar out on walks. I love the break-away collar; takes the worry out of them getting caught and strangled on something. I had to order it from Premier in the US to get it. I also ordered the Premier Sure Fit Harness. It has 5 (?) different places to adjust and fits really well. Leanne

I wouldn't use a harness, because it goes around the strongest part of the dog, the chest. When your dog sees a squirrel, he'll drag you along, too! Martingales are way better, because they go around a dog's sensitive neck, only needing a gentle tug to get his attention on you.
