I am wondering if I should be using a harness instead of a martingale collar. Waht are the benefits or disadvantages to either the martingale or a harness? I am also wondering if your greys wear their collars around the house as well or just when outside? Thanks for the info.

I tried a harness on Chase, and he couldn't stand it! he yelped and yelped and pulled so bad on a harness it rubbed him raw. So we stick with a martingale for now.
And i always take Chase's collar off in the house, i've heard horror stories about dew claws getting caught in the collar and collars getting caught on crate walls where the greyhound was hurt seriously! I know Chase caught his tags on his bed once and it frightened him pretty bad, until he unbent the ring his tags were on. Plus, i find it keeps the collar a little cleaner when he's not always in it.

I voted other... I use Martingales on Atlas and Orion but No-pull harnesses on Icarus and Echo (they have a swiss velvet lining where they would rub their tender spots). Icarus wears a harness for support. It is easier to walk him and he feels more comfortable than when he wears a martingale. Echo wears a harness because she's a puller and given that she's 8.5 years old, I don't want her injuring her neck or back. Her pulling has decreased dramatically since we changed over. I bought my harness from dogattired.com at Hugs.

Bob and Ticker wear just collars all the time even in the house. In fact they actually get upset if you take them off for longer than just a good neck scratch....lol.

We use collars, but we have harnesses for camping. We use the harnesses if we need to tie them to anything. Hotwire does not walk well with a harness, and yelps if there is any pressure on it at all.

Tigger has a harness and loves it. He walks so great on it too. Abby has a harness but hates it. We only use it on her when we need to tie her up when we are camping. Both dogs wear their collars all the time. Tigger hates not having one on.

Harnesses all the time when outside. I have one no pull and the other is ezy-dog brand.
I don't like martingales as they can pull on a dog's neck. But the boys do wear tag collars all the time.

I use a martingale because ROman is the most docile walker ever and rarely do I ever have to reign him in. But sometimes he is quite unruly with other dogs around and likes to bark and leap up into the air (it really impresses all those little doggie owners who think Roman want's to eat their pup for a snack...eventhough he probably does ). So sometimes, for that reason, I put his harness on him. But he definitely does not like it!!

My first grey got the loop of his martingale caught on the kitchen cupboard door knob. I ran downstairs and found hin in a panic, frantically trying to free himself. Thank goodness I was home because he would have strangled himself

We use a harness - Shadow has a very high prey drive and has the knack of backing out of his martingale so fast . The harness allows us to keep control while we talk him out of his latest snack attempt. He is sooo much better than he once was with his prey drive. he will always have it of course. He doesn't wear his tags in the house UNLESS we have company - just in case of an open door!!!!! He doesn't seem too interested in anything else but comings and goings however we don't want to take chances. Robin, Judy, and Shadow

We found a martingale collar made for the greys. These have been fantastic. They distribute the pressure over more of the neck, so no pressure points. We still take them off in the house, just to make sure. www.rcpets.com/houndcollar.html

My first greyhound had a neck injury so we had to switch him from his martingale to a greyhound harness which we had to order online. My 3 boys have tag collars that they wear always and martingales for their walks only. It has been said that a greyhound (or other breed) should only where a martingale when supervised.

I use both martingales (how could I not..hahaha...my guys were great sales reps for me!!) and harnesses. It took a bit of time for them to realize I wasn't going to take the harness off just because they didn't like it and they did adjust. If I want a bit extra control I'll use the harness and always remove the martingale!!! when in the house and/or alone.

My gang wears their collars in the house, I do make sure their collars fit snugly so no loops hanging to get snagged on things, the only problem I have ever had is with the split ring on the tags getting hooked in the rug, so I changed them to a design that will not snag, I use just the martingale on Sunny and for Maya a combo of harness and martingale with coupler to attach the 2 together, Maya is a spook has has proved even in a snuggly fitted martingale collar tightened at the top of the neck she can back up and pull her head out of the collar when she gets spooked and wants to run and hide, so now she has back up devices to ensure she cannot get loose on me

So I had a bit of a scare over Christmas. I was walking Ty and a lab puppy kept pulling his owner towards Ty and barking. Ty freaked and managed to twist and get one ear out of his collar. Of course this is eight at night on Christmas Eve so nothing open to get a harness. I get home and ask hubby for any suggestions. He looks at all our collars and leashes. Then he says "do you use this coupler?' (I had bought it thinking it would be easier to walk both together - NOT). He said for now try putting both his martingales on him the coupler attached to each collar and then if he gets out of one you still have the other. It works great he actually doesn't get excited at other dogs - for now but I AM getting a harness for him. Where do you get a good quality one (our pet store has kinda cheap ones) and how do you fit them? Thanks Tara (nervous nelly)
