The crate was used just once at our house and we were all miserable. Charm is a wonderful housemate with no bad habits. She sleeps on the couch when we go out and loves to look out the window and watch the world go by.I like the fact that I have a big dog that looks out the front window when we are not home. (Yes, she is a great deterent for those unwanted door to door people too - teeheehee)

Stryder was crated for the first 5 months whenever I wasn't home and probably the first 4 months at bedtime as well. Now he sleeps in my room on his pillow at night (or the couch if he sneaks out) and is uncrated all the time. His crate is only up for his food.

Bright was crated for the first few weeks, then I moved the crate and she doens't use it anymore, I just limit her to one room when i'm out and she sleeps on her pillow on the floor in my room at night.

Rose is crated when we leave... I haven't had the courage to leave her out yet. She broke out of her cage a few times and did damage to herself and to the drapes and blinds in the house so as of right now I crate. I think for her she is safest in her crate... but one day I'd like to let her roam free and sit where she pleases!

Angel and Ollie have never been crated, nor were my first two greys (heck, I don't even own crates anymore). I've always been fortunate enough to take several days off work each time a new grey has joined the family which allows time for all of us to get to know each other and set down rules. I do however gate the new member in the kitchen whenever I leave the house. When the newbie can be trusted in all ways, then he/she gets to have free reign in the house.
Angel and Ollie are really good when they're alone, like there's no chewing, peeing, damage, etc. They do, however, make an absolute mess .... Angel collects ALL the pillows she can carry and Ollie scatters his stuffies everywhere ... the house looks like 20 kids live there. But really, I don't know what I would do without them and their funny antics!

Our first grey had been bounced twice before arriving on our door stop..no crate. When we adopted Tina in June, Bill strongly reccomended a crate. Off we go to purchase this lovely crate, and the Miss would not go in it. We left it up for a week...she would quickly dash in to get a stuffed toy and dash back out. I am fortunate that I work from home or the nanny is here. Someone is always home. Having said that, we left her for the first time last Sunday.....we just got the cold shoulder when we got home. The house was intact. She loves us again!!

I am happy to say that we have allowed Rudy out of the crate for the past three weeks. When we go to work we baby gate him in the back part of the house that has a comfy bed - that he sleeps in at night - and a few other rooms. We have only had one issue and that was because we fed him too many treats He jumps on the bed and watches us leave out the window and jumps up when we get home. He has been a great boy with no issues of separation.

Dogs are instinctively den animals and while crates feel safe and covered, a dog bed will do. I'd say avoid crating and get another Grey!!!!

Sophie doesn't need it, but she's always in it when the door is open. I used to be SO AGAINST crates until Sophie and Dodge had a little spiff and he was sick so after that, in the crate you go when I'm not home! When we do fostering, crating is a must, the one factor i'm not looking forward to!
