Mamma Rio (Dec. 4, 2007-Aug. 24, 2019)
She was the one who started it all, the first of The Quints. I walked into the barn at GRA for the first time, and went straight to her crate at the very back. She had just come in the night before. I had never seen a greyhound in person before. She looked deep into my eyes for a few minutes, kissed me, roached, and begged for her tummy to be rubbed. We drove down the road to the bank machine to give Bill cash immediately. I was in love.
She should have been a broodie. She had the soul of one. But someone had other plans for her, another βfamilyβ for her to take care of. She was Mamma to everyone in our household. The kids, the kitties, the other pups, fosters, and our grandchildren. She stayed beside us all through illness, injuries, grief, and as the others were dying. She demanded it, and would not be swayed. She was, quite simply, Mamma Rio.
Her sweetness was something we will always remember. And her playfulness. Her dancing eyebrows. Her golden red colour with hardly any brindling (I used to say she ran too fast through the brindling machine). Her bunny-soft fur (from eating so many bunnies, I told her, as her teeth chattered). And her tendency to roach anywhere and everywhere. All the time. In the middle of Meet and Greets, at busy greyhound events so everyone had to step over her, in food lineups, and even getting her teeth cleaned. She took relaxation to a new level.
It seems surreal that she is gone now. She waited until Mirage was back home with me, happy once again with her pack, and then she let me know that the rest of them needed her Over the Bridge....Tiana, Wiily-Bear, Merlin, Little Kasie Lynne, Bluey-cat, and SamSam. I always tried to be the best Momma I could to her, so I kissed her, and let her go.
There will be a big party in RainbowLand tonight, Iβm sure.
I love you, Mamma. Rest easy now, and have fun. One day, we will all be together again. πππ
(Once again, Photobucket hates me argh!!!)
