Hello everyone,
My little girl had a sudden allergic reaction over the weekend. It started as swelling on both sides of her mouth (she does not have any teeth issues and is not on any meds other than Sentinel). The swelling was not painful to the touch and she was a little bit itchy. Earlier that day I gave her half a banana, a treat she had before, with no allergic reactions. My other girl (also a greyhound) had a banana as well, with no issues. We took her to the clinic where they did a physical, no fever, but she was extremly sensitive to having her temperature taken and yelped several times. Her bum did not look irritated and I attributed this to anxiety. We were told to give her 50 mg of Benadryl every 8 hrs. After 2 dosages, her swelling did, almost completely, go down. A day and a half later, I woke up to find her with hives on her underside (red marks, almost resembling scratches) and her left eye almost completely swollen shut and itchy. The swelling was not painful to the touch and her pupil looked clear, not foggy. I took her to er again where they established her temperature was slightly raised, but not a fever. She was also given a shot of Benadryl and steroid. I also noticed that she was less perky since these issues started and spent a lot of time resting. She just got the 2 shots I referenced today, around 7 am today and I will schedule a follow up with my regular vet. So far, they are not able to tell me what caused this reaction.
Did anyone experience similat issues with their grey? What was causing it? Do you have any recommendations on prevention?
Thank you

Kasey had allergies, but nothing like the sudden onset of what you have experienced. Can you recall if there were any other changes in the house? Did you wash their beds recently with a different detergent? Are they laying on something different than usual, i.e. new carpet? Perhaps there was a bug bite/spider bite? Is the vet 100% it's an allergic reaction? Was there a blood test done? It's a little late in the season for ticks/fleas, however anything is possible. Please keep monitoring them for other hot spots as this does sound rather unusual.
May I suggest perhaps cross posting this on GreyTalk? There are rather knowledgeable members on that board in the Health and Medical section that may be be more familiar/able to help you and you can do further research.

I see you were able to post over there. Already some feedback has been given, and you'll have to do some investigating as to what could have been the cause. Good luck and keep us updated with how your little girl is doing...she's in my thoughts.

Please keep us posted. I associate swelling and hives with allergic reaction but that's with people. I haven't experienced this with a dog before.

Experienced an allergic reaction to unknown source some time back with Light. Never found the root cause but never happened again. Also had a Boston Terrier years ago who had reaction to eating a rose hip (fell from Xmas wreath... saw him eat it and never thought....later swelling of mouth/face and panting, restless, and later itchiness and hives). I hope you find the cause of your girls reaction. Food for thought... even if she had banana first time with no symptoms, it can require exposure to trigger the immune system to build up antibodies to the allergy causing substance (antigen). Then, with the next exposure, the reaction happens. I am pasting the thread I made when this happened to Light. Interesting recall about halfway through (by Whovian) with allergic reaction to plastic! gracanada.proboards.com/thread/9346/light-anaphylaxis

Thank you everyone. She is all good now but I am not taking any more chances with bananas. Too frightening.
