I'm hoping someone has a suggestion to help me out here... Owen is having some surgery next week. We have found a spot on his leg that appeared at first like just a little bare spot but has now been growing in size - it's fairly flat, and almost rubbery in appearance, but it's a little alarming. Yesterday the vet recommended it be removed and biopsied so he's going in on Tuesday. Keeping my fingers crossed. Anyway - my question is - how do you keep a post-surgical cone on a greyhound?? I don't want to tie it to his collar, but it just falls right off his cute little head. I was wondering if a soft neck brace might work? I will ask the vet on Tuesday as well, but was wondering if anyone had any suggestions. Thanks!

In my opinion, and thankfully not in my experience, you need a heck of a sized cone in order to prevent a hound from bending like a gymnast to lick. I'm not sure where on the leg this spot is, so it's hard to say exactly what would work best. Alternatives to a cone would be to put a t-shirt on so they can't get to the wound, with a muzzle. Better yet, if you can continually supervise post op, to prevent any licking, that's ideal. For Kasey's biopsy, he had a small stitch that was trying desperately to hang on, and bandages DID NOT work, so I simply put a bandaid over it and voila.

Thank you! I will be around to supervise Owen until I have to go to work the next day. I might try bandaids or gauze and tape, thanks. The spot being removed is in the centre of his thigh - right in the fleshy part.

Don't have a suggestion on the cone based on personal experience (thankful), but I have heard of others using their muzzles (sometimes with stool guard?) and/or a sleeved T shirt idea...but guess that would depend where on the leg you are wanting to protect. Hopefully someone who has tried some alternatives will chime in with some feedback. Did want to wish you the very best for Tuesday. Thoughts will be with you.

Have you got any greyhound legged pj's? If you're in London I could loan you a pair.

Thanks again - 2 more brilliant ideas. I feel silly I didn't even think of his muzzle. As for pajamas - thanks Midge for the offer that's very kind! I have been toying with the idea of making Owen some jammies already, as he really seems to feel chilly at night. I think I will try to find an online pattern this weekend. Thanks for everyone's feedback - this is why I like the GRA forum.

To keep any of our guys from licking we use their muzzle and duct tape over the opening. (inside and outside)

When Thunder's toe was amputated in January, he tolerated the cone very well. It was just wrapped around his flat collar. But Bruce goes ballistic with a cone. We have an open wound wrapped for healing now because he licked the stitched area and reopened the wound after 5 days. We got complacent as it looked great and he'd been ignoring it. Oy. It's a front paw so cone isn't an option so we have the muzzle with duct tape. Okay, long winding response but I vote for muzzle and don't get complacent!!!!

Thank you for the suggestions and good wishes, Owen is home now and although pretty groggy and looking a little unimpressed, he is a lucky pup today... vet just called and lump is benign so we are very thankful for that. And he has shiny teeth (no extractions woohoo) and trimmed nails so he's looking dapper (except for the 8 stitches) so we can relax now.
He hasn't needed anything to keep him from licking yet, he couldn't care less - but I know that will change soon. We have his muzzle ready.
Thanks again!

Glad Owen is doing well. Hope he continues to ignore the stitches.
