I think Emily was suffering from "doggie flu" this week. Monday & Tuesday she was off her food (which didn't alarm me as she periodically fasts herself to keep her slim & trim figure (drives me nuts but all my broodies have done this). I noticed she was desperately looking to eat greenery - nibbled at my potted ivy & looked for dried goldenrod on our walks. On Wed her tummy was more gurgly than normal but she ate both meals well. Then she had had very loose stool Wed night. I started her on Colloidal Silver that night. She woke me up at 2:30am & 5am Thursday morning to go outside and again loose bowels. I stayed home with her Thurs and continued the CS (every hour). She had 2 more loose BM's but then simmered down in the afternoon. She wanted to eat so I fed her dinner but in hind sight I should have fasted her. I took her temp every time I administered CS and it was normal (36-37 Celsius). She woke me up again at 5am on Friday to go out & again loose BM & she threw up a small amount. This time I fasted her (no breakfast). I had to go to work so I kept her confined to my front room with towels & sheets spread on the floor and she had access to water. I managed to come home at lunch to check on her & bless her soul NO ACCIDENT - took her out & she pee'd but no BM! Gave her some more CS and went back to work. Got home at 5:30 and we went for a walk - again only pee. She was anxious for dinner so I gave her a small amount of kibble, boiled rice, pumpkin & fried ground beef (drained). She gobbled it up & no BM's that night & she slept through the night. This morning we had a lovely walk as the sun rose - she had a small BM (not her usual "log style" but firmer & somewhat formed). She had the same breakfast as the dinner meal the night before (just a larger potion) and so far today she has not had any BM's and seems completely back to her normal energy level. For her dinner I incorporated some of her usual Raw food with kibble, rice & pumpkin so we will see how things go on our bedtime walk.
Emily has never really had tummy issues so it caught me by surprise. I will keep a few ideas tucked in the back of my mind for next time (hopefully there won't be a next time), but I think I should have started the CS as soon as I saw her looking for greenery & when the unusual gut noises started as well as start a bland diet of rice & ground beef then. I should have started fasting as soon as the diarrhea became a pattern. To alleviate anyone's concerns, if there was any blood evident in her stool and/or if she had presented with a fever over 12 hours or thrown up more than the 1 time I would have taken her to my vet immediately.
Just wondered if any other hounds in the GRA world have had anything like this recently.

All my four have been well so far this winter but I'm certainly happy to hear that Emily is back to being her healthy self. Carla, you are such a good Mom .... when I get sick, I'm gonna call for Nurse Moncheri to make me better!!!

Sorry to hear Emily was not feeling well, it is always so worrying when our pups aren't well. Lanny had a mild case of what you are describing about 2 weeks ago, I put it down to the stress of some pretty severe storms that we have had in Bruce county. Lanny is suspected to have IBS but I have found that as long as I monitor him closely and get him on some canned Science Diet weight control food (comparable to the expensive stuff the vet had him on during an episode a year ago) he seems to come around within a few days. Lanny has had some pretty severe attacks of this which quickly turns into just a bloody mess in no time so it is something that definately needs monitoring and as you said if there is blood see a vet (my vet is reasonable about these things and now when he has a severe episode I can just get the meds he needs without putting him through the exam). I imagine Emily was fairly lethargic through this as Lanny gets quite depressed when he gets feeling that way. It sounds like you did the right things to get your girl back to health and I am glad she has recovered. Could you let me know what dose of CS you were treating Emily with, it might be worth trying in the future (of course I hope we don't have another episode but he typically gets it in spring and fall). Lanny gets treated with metronizadol and sulcrate when he gets in bad shape but if I catch it early enough like this winter he was able to recover without the meds and he didn't lose any weight this time, but I would like to try the CS as I have some in the house. Thanks, Beth

Hi Beth, I have a syringe that is 3ml. I do my best to squirt as far back in her mouth as I can & for the most part Emily is quite cooperative, but some of it gets flicked out by her tongue.

She was not fond of me squirting liquid down her throat and taking her temp (rectal thermometer) on an hourly basis!

Well the good news is that we just returned from our bedtime walk and bowed movement was a perfect log! Only a dog owner gets excited about such things ?

I'm glad that Emily is feeling better. It's so horrible when we don't know what's wrong with them. I think dog owners and people that are traveling for a long time talk about bowel movements equally. You are such a good mom to Emz. She's a lucky girl!

Thanks for the dosage of CS, I will keep that for future use. I am so glad Emily is back to her "regular" self, I hope it was a one of incident and she doesn't have any more troubles.

Boy, I think I had it hear too. Lenard had the runny pops for two days and then Jed. Glad Emily has recovered.

According to various sources in my area lately, both dogs AND humans have this flu and it is transferable between species. Glad to hear Em is over it. (Garry had it too, but he has recovered also.)
