Owen is having dental surgery on Monday, a top canine tooth (fang) needs to be removed. It was already broken off when we brought Owen home back in May, but what is left of it, is black. He has another molar that looks pretty bad as well. Hopefully those are the only 2 teeth he will lose. I'm not looking forward to this, but at least I can be home with Owen afterwards, as I'm on vacation now for a few weeks. I hope he won't be too uncomfortable and is able to eat properly. I've had many dogs who have had their teeth cleaned, but I've never dealt with extractions. I've read some previous posts on the issue, seems like 1 tooth extraction often ends up being multiple teeth, I hope that's not the case!!

I personally have not had to deal with this issue (yet) but can imagine your concern. I have read many posts from those who have had to go through this with their pups and I have noted that it seems to be a smooth procedure with an amazingly speedy recovery time. I'm sure someone will chime in with first-hand experience, but I just wanted to wish Owen (and you) all the best on Monday. Please do let us know how things go. Will be thinking of you in the meantime.

Ditto. I haven't gone through this but have read about several here on the board and it does seem to go smoothly. I've often wondered if they feel tooth pain the way humans do?? Curious. At any rate it sounds like the right thing to do for Owen. I hope things go smoothly and heal quickly. Extra scratches for Owen.

Poor Owen, but he will do just fine. Just tell him that when we adopted Liza she had to have 16 teeth removed!!! and she had no trouble at all eating.

I haven't had to deal with this yet but I expect it to happened very soon. Callie has very stinky breath and last time we were at the vet for a regular check up she mentioned that it might be good to go for a dental. Iv'e heard that February is "dental month" and cleanings are a lot cheaper so I guess that would be the best time. I'll be thinking of you and Owen and hope everything goes smoothly

3 of my greyhounds have had teeth removed - not many teeth, 3 was the most and that was Lottie within the last 12 months.
Zak bled a bit afterwards which upset me but he was fine within 24 hours. Gerry had to go back in overnight because his bleeding wouldn't stop. He needed a couple of stitches in his gum.
In all cases they recovered very quickly, in 24 hours they were back to their normal selves and were better than before when the teeth were causing them pain.
It's always worth getting teeth removed if they are decayed as your dog is better off without them and will eat better than they did before in my experience.

Curious to know how Owen's dental surgery went today. You don't often hear of a canine tooth being extracted, in many cases, it's due to an injury/cracked tooth/broken tooth. My Bridge Angel Frankie had to have a canine tooth extracted too and his healing went well. Wishing Owen a fast recovery.

Owen is home and doing well. As it turns out, only one tooth (upper canine) had to be removed. The vet called me and asked me if I could pick him up early, he did well during surgery but was so anxious and agitated afterwards they felt he would rest better at home. They saved me the tooth in case I wanted to see it - kind of gross but interesting - I had no idea that the canine tooth root was so long. He only had about 1/4 inch of tooth above the gumline, and about 1 inch below. That broken tooth had to hurt - there was a hole in the top of it which I hadn't noticed before. Anyway he was happy to eat, and he's resting now. He's still a little restless, but I'm sure a good night sleep will help too. I just need to keep him quiet for a few days til the risk of bleeding is gone. Phew.

Happy to hear that everything went well for Owen. Now he will be a Happy Camper while he waits for Santa Claus with lots of goodies for him and have a Merry Christmas with your special boy, "Owen".
