On July 11, 2006, my family picked up Amy. Amy had gathered a lot of friends there, while she awaited adoption. She was 5 at that time, and had raced blind in one eye her entire career.
When we adopted her, I'm not sure we knew what we were getting into, but over time she adjusted to us, and we to her. We had kids aged 11,12,15 and 17 at that time. We now have no one living at home, as they have either finished post secondary, or are living away at school. We had originally got Amy as company for our dog, Woody. Sadly, he died 2 years ago, at the age of 15. We had gained another dog over time, Kona, so he has been keeping Amy company the last 2 years.
Over the past couple of years, Amy had most of her teeth removed, was treated for corns on her toes, stopped being able to run too far or too long, and was diagnosed with a possible cancer in her jaw. However, within the last month, she has been struggling to get up off her bed, not eating her normal amount and wetting on her bed overnight and still laying on the wet bed in the morning. In the last 24 hours, she was falling over when she stood.
We knew that she was suffering, and the vet agreed that it was time. But, it never makes the decision any easier.
She laid in my lap on the floor at the vet's, while I held her. She wasn't scared, as she normally is at the vet, which in itself, made the situation that much more sad.
What a life she has had.
Amy Dyet September 4th, 2001 - December 5th, 2014 Always remembered.

Amy is at peace and she is not suffering anymore. It is never the right time to say "good-bye" but Amy knew when she laid in your lap that she was safe and ready to start her journey: "God's finger touched her, and she slept", Rest in Peace Sweet Amy

I remember pretty little Amy. She was at GRA when I visited one day. I recall the joy on the forum when Amy found her home.
What a home she found! She had a wonderful life with you. Just not long enough. Never long enough.
Godspeed Amy.

My heart breaks for you in having to let go of sweet Amy, after so many years as part of your family. Even when you know it is time to let her go, the pain can be tremendous. And the house can be so empty without her. I know, I have been there, as have many others on the Forum. You gave her an incredible gift by recognizing that it was time to let her go, and by holding her in your lap and letting her know how much you loved her as she left you. Perhaps she was not afraid because she was at peace with what was going to happen.
In time, the pain will ease, and you will have an easier time remembering her with more smiles, and laughter and fewer tears. Be kind to yourself during this time.
Run free like the wind in Rainbow Land with the other Angels, Sweet Amy.

My sincere condolences to you and family. Amy must have had a special determination to race with her vision challenge. Obviously a very special girl destined for a very special home... yours. No doubt she had a wonderful retirement with you and her years were blessed. I believe she realized that her time had come and she had to leave, but her love and trust while in your arms made this a natural passage for her. How bitter to lose her and yet how assuring to know she was lovingly at peace. Her spirit will always be there with you.
Godspeed sweet Amy.

My heart breaks for your loss. I know how difficult it is to be there at the end, but you clearly gave Amy the love and strength she needed.

Oh my.. run free sweet Amy. I was one of her fan club.. she was a very special girlie. I was overjoyed the day I learned she had picked her family... having lost the battle against hubby to bring home a sixth! I'm glad to hear she had a long and very happy life. <3 This is how I still remember her.... BIG Smiles all the time and a full body wiggle...

I too remember Amy and was overjoyed when she was adopted into your family. She was a very special little girl, one who managed to race with a handicap, a little girl who was successful in both her career and her retirement. Amy's spirit will live on in your heart forever ... cherish her memories until you meet again.
Godspeed sweet Amy ....
