Our dear old broodie, Sunny, seemed to be doing quite well for a 12 1/4 yr. old gal. Her appetite was good and now and again she would have a real gallop with her companion Rain, who just turned 7. Unfortunately, on Monday, when they went for their daily run her back leg snapped just above the hock. My husband rushed her to the vet but the intern on duty said she could be sent to London to have the break plated - at a cost of $3,000.00, or amputate the leg. As retirees with VERY limited income, an expenditure of $3,000.00 was out of the question and the thought of the rehab she'd have to go through for both procedures - at her age - seemed cruel.
When we adopted Sunny she seemed quite depressed. She had a lot of bad teeth which were likely painful and she was very shy. If anyone was near her with any sort of "stick" she would cower. She never learned how to play but she was happy to run with her "puppy", Rain. But she had one true love, a red Eurasier named Brody. When he was around, she turned into Miss Flirty Puppy and the sight of a white greyhound with slim body and short hair hair making up to a red fluff-ball was something to see. She was never interested in any other dog - even other greyhounds.
Rain has been wandering the house looking for her - and missing her as we all are. We hope she was content in her last few years; she was not demonstrative at all so it was hard to tell....
We had a great surprise this morning when a huge bunch of flowers was delivered from the vet hospital. They are so kind.
Rain is only 7 so we hope to have a greyhound in our lives for the next 5 years, but we are 74 and 80 so she might outlive us.
