I'm at a crossroads with Rennys food, I've given Orijen a good chance at success, about 3 large bags worth, but his poops never really solidified. This is the 3rd kibble we have tried. After his latest bout of the big "D" I don't want to go back to it. He is eating a bland diet of rice, and beef right now, with a probiotic until he regulates again.
Opinions, do I give kibble another try. ( thinking of the mythical green bag iams) or do I switch him over to raw? His stomach is pretty sensitive right now, so I'm not sure what to do!

We tried a variety of kibble over the span of a year or so. All the "designer" kibbles were disliked by her or, if she liked it, she didn't actually do well on it. So Iams green bag it was -- she loves it and does well. I assume you have made sure your pup doesn't have any internal parasites which could be causing the soft poop.

I have to say, I saw a couple of dogs on this brand this summer and had firm poops, always a treat when you're constantly on "poo patrol"!

Raw is really the best way to go imo, although I must say my two are not on it quite yet. I have been building up to making the switch by learning all I can so they get balanced meals and that I am 100% educated in how to go about it. I have had the SAME issues as Renny has had with Onyx having always soft poops. He was on Eagle Pack and Merrick and never settled his soft stool issues. He had his fecal float and was cleared. One day I left his food at home and he ate some of my friend's food she feeds her pack of 4 greys. It was Kirkland chicken, veg and rice. I thought "Oh no! I shall see fountains of poop later!". Instead, he had the best poo he ever had! I gradually swapped him over to Kirkland (although I am a food snob and was not happy about doing it although Kirkland is a 4 star food on many dog food sites) and he has awesome poops now and MUCH smaller than with the expensive Eagle Pack and Merrick. I have also heard very good things about the green bag Iams. The two brands (Kirkland and Iams) both contain beet pulp which is said the reason for good poops. I know when I had horses we would give them beet pulp as well and it was super beneficial so I don;t see why it would be any less for canines. If you do fast, do not worry about your baby not eating for the day, When they race, some kennels will fast them for the 24 hours beforehand so they know the routine. Good Luck! It really sucks to have that soft poop issue.

When we were chosen by Gable Style, now known as Michel, 5 years ago she had the dreaded pudding poop. We tried everything from raw to kibble to probiotics, pumpkin -- you name it we tried it. Thanks to all the wonderful advice freely given on this forum. We worked for two years to solidify her stools. Then we tried Kirkland Lamb and Rice and we haven't looked back. She has consistently solid poops now and she gets about a tablespoon of coconut oil with her supper every night. Once in awhile she does get a turkey or chicken neck -- not very often because it causes very dry hard stools. Good luck on your quest, hopefully it will soon sort itself out and you'll be on the road to nice solid and easily picked up poops. She also get a cod liver oil and glucosamine capsule with her supper.

Patsmith, if your girl can't handle the necks (i.e. the dry hard stools), try giving her some tripe with her dinner that day and it should solve the problem. I use a cube of frozen raw green tripe for this purpose. I would guess, if you don't have any, that canned Tripett would suffice.

OwnedBySummer: Thanks for the tip, will look for tripe in the supermarkets. Don't recall seeing it but never really looked either. There are a couple of meat markets about town we can try too. Thanks again, this Forum is the greatest. Coming to Welland from Toronto we are still adjusting to not having anything and everything at our fingertips. lol

You want (green) tripe from a pet store or a raw food provider. M

Yes, definitely the green (smelly nasty) tripe! The white human stuff is useless.
